Jonzac, a castle

Jonzac visite chateau JPat 2013- omtThe Jonzac castle is the city's symbol. Installed on a rocky spur and magnificently overlooking the Seugne Valley, the structure withstood attacks from the Hundred Years' War, Huguenots and slingers. The stronghold was transformed into a well-groomed seigniorial residence during the 17th century. The town council and sub prefecture officials have settled in the castle during the 19th century, still mindful of its state of preservation. During a guided tour, you may learn about the edifice's thousand year history, and wander through the city council's museum, the wedding hall where seigneurs' portraits are displayed, and the theatre from the Napoleon III era. Should you decide on going up to the wall walk, you will be ravished by one of the finest views of the town and the structure's impressive framework.

Jonzac, an historical town centre

Jonzac rue de champagnac 6 CDCHS V.SabadelThe town's historical centre is carefully managed by the municipality. From the renovated Champagnac medieval alleys and "Dark Alleyways" patrol path, to the embellished castle's esplanade and town's main squares, everything emphasise the city's charm.

With its Baltard-styled architecture, the covered market is one of Charente-Maritime's most remarkable. Neighbouring the market is a Romanesque church. Its forecourt is set to illustrate the Merovingian cemetery discovered underneath in 2009, and is, along with the façade, graced with a beautiful lights display, making the church one of France's hundred most beautiful detours. In the Western part of town, the Carmel monk former monastery, located next to the Haute-Saintonge multimedia library and leading to the Maison des Artistes (Artists House), is another of Jonzac's must-see. Each of these landmarks, along with the Departmental Archives and Protestant temple, are introduced by the tourist information centre during guided tours.

You may also discover these venues outside of our guided tours. The "Traversée de Jonzac par les rues et chemins" map, available at the Tourist Information Centre (22 place du château) and online highlights them.
