Heroes of the French resistance

Pierre ruibet résistant à Jonzac durant la seconde guerre mondiale

Pierre Ruibet et Claude Gatineau, heroes of the French resistance during WWII

In 1944, these two young people made an act of heroism which cost them their lives during the Second World War

Indeed, they were hired in a huge ammunition depot managed by the German army in the Heurtebise quarries in Jonzac. After weeks of preparation, they finally exploded a German strategic arsenal and contributed to participating in the French liberation troops.
Since this same 22 May, the Jonzac Tourist Office has been offering a guided tour "in the footsteps of Ruibet and Gatineau". This new visit will be an opportunity to discover the places in Jonzac where these two young patriots lived their last weeks in the exaltation of an act of bravery that has remained in all memories. The memory of other resistance fighters will also be evoked in this memorable journey, which will end with the screening of a documentary on the same subject by a Montpellier university student.

The tourist office also sells Marthe Robert's book, which relates Pierre Ruibet's arrival in Jonzac and his stay at her home: the time needed to prepare for this "sabotage".
